How Can You Check a Casino Licence?

Checking a casino licence is one of the easiest ways to separate a properly regulated operator from a website that simply looks professional. A licence means a gambling business has been authorised by a regulator under specific rules. But here is the street-smart part: do not trust the licence logo sitting at the bottom of a casino website. Verify it yourself. A genuine check takes only a few minutes and can tell you whether the operator’s claims match official records.

Find the Casino’s Legal Company Name

Start by finding the casino’s legal operator name, not just its brand name. Look at the website footer, terms and conditions, or responsible gambling page. Online casinos often operate under a company name that is different from the name customers see. This distinction matters because regulators normally record the legal business, licence number, trading name, or domain. If a casino only gives you a flashy brand name but makes its actual operator difficult to identify, treat that as a reason to investigate further.

Identify the Regulator

Next, find out which gambling authority supposedly issued the licence. The regulator matters because licensing standards differ between jurisdictions. For example, the UK Gambling Commission provides a public register where users can search gambling businesses by business name, trading name, domain name, or account number. Its register also shows licence status, making it possible to check whether an operator is recorded as active or has another status.

Search the Official Register

This is the part that actually verifies the claim. Go directly to the regulator’s official website and search for the casino’s operator name or domain. Do not rely on a search result, review website, or badge supplied by the casino itself. The UK Gambling Commission, for example, maintains a public register containing thousands of gambling businesses and allows searches using domain names as well as company details.

Match the Details Carefully

Finding the company in a register is not enough. Match the details. Check whether the legal company name, licence number, website domain, licence type, and status correspond with what the casino displays. Malta’s Gaming Authority provides licence verification pages showing information such as the licensee, licence number, licence type, status, approved game types, and authorised website URLs. Its verification pages also warn users to make sure they are on the official MGA authorisation domain when checking authenticity.

Check Whether the Licence Covers Your Activity

A valid licence does not automatically mean every gambling service offered by an operator is covered in every location. Look at what the licence actually authorises. Some licences are for business-to-business services, while others cover consumer-facing gambling services. The MGA register, for example, distinguishes B2B and B2C licence types and identifies approved game categories.

Look for Regulatory Actions

Finally, check whether the regulator has recorded sanctions, settlements, or other regulatory actions involving the operator. The UK Gambling Commission’s public register includes regulatory-action information alongside its licensing services. This does not automatically tell you whether a casino is good or bad, but it gives you useful background when comparing operators.

A casino licence should be treated as a starting point for comparison, not a guarantee that everything about the operator is perfect. Verify the licence directly, match the details, check its scope and status, and look at regulatory history. That simple process gives you a much stronger casino compass than trusting a logo or a marketing claim.
