This year the Turner Prize, one of the most prestigious
for contemporary art, is being organised by BALTIC. It is the first
time the Prize has been presented outside of Tate in its 27 year
history.
Established in 1984 to celebrate new developments in
contemporary art, the Prize is awarded each year to a British
artist under fifty for an outstanding exhibition or other
presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding.
An exhibition of each of the four nominated artists will feature
in the Level 3 gallery of BALTIC, from 21 October 2011 to 8
Janurary 2012, giving visitors the opportunity to see the work of
some of this year's most prominent contemporary
artists. Alongside the Turner Prize 2011 exhibition
BALTIC will also be featuring other exhibitions as well as hosting
a Turner Prize Cafe which will give visitors the chance to sit and
enjoy a coffee whilst chatting to us about contemporary art and the
Turner Prize.
