The Northern Art Prize celebrates and rewards
contemporary visual artists based in the North of
England.
As long as the artists are based in the North, they can be of
any age, any nationality and working in any media. Every year
a maximum of twenty-four artists are put forward by twelve
nominators from the North East, North West and Yorkshire regions.
The nominators range from curators of public art galleries to
freelance curators and directors of artist-led spaces. From
this longlist, a shortlist of four artists are selected by a panel
of judges which changes every year. In 2011, the panel includes:
Caroline Douglas (Head of the Arts Council Collection), Tim Marlow
(Writer, Broadcaster, Art Historian and Director of Exhibitions at
White Cube), Simon Starling (Turner Prize winning Artist), Simon
Wallis (Director at The Hepworth Wakefield) and chair Sarah Brown
(Curator of Exhibitions at Leeds Art Gallery).
The shorlisted artists, Liadin Cooke, Leo Fitzmaurice, James
Hugonin and Richard Rigg exhibit their work in a group show at
Leeds Art Gallery curated by Sarah Brown.
The winning artist will be announced on 19 January 2012 and
